North Carolina, a "battleground state," has not yet been officially counted to a satisfactory number representative of the citizens' votes one way (Democrat) or the other (Republican) regarding its choice for President of The United States.What can be said, however, is that an amazing number of voters turned out and what an historic occasion this has become. Leaf collection begins Nov. 3, 2008Unfortunately, the beautiful fall leaf season will soon be in its final days. The City of Asheville will be conducting bagged leaf collection twice a month during the season (length TBD).Asheville city residents wishing for their leaves to be picked up should bag or contain all leaves and place them curbside by 7AM on the Monday morning of their scheduled collection week. The City asks residents to please not put leaves in storm drains or near storm grates. Note: Asheville City ordinance bans the burning of leaves within the city limits. A popular alternative to bagging leaves is to use a mulching mower, which will provide your lawn with a mild compost. Also, leaves can be raked into piles and left to provide a good compost for Spring gardens! Residents with questions can contact the sanitation department at (828) 251-1122. Labels: fall sanitation

Monday, September 22, 2008 Autumn is here in the mountains!Okay folks, now's the time to begin traveling on the Blue Ridge Parkway, visiting our local Blue Ridge Mountains forests, and hiking the Appalachian Trail. It's leaf season in Asheville. Today, September 22, 2008, marks the first day of the fall season. Long been the eye of the prize in the south, Asheville is home to gorgeous trees marked by millenia of growth in the Appalachian mountains. When the trees begin to go into remission and the leaves turn various colors, we are in for quite a treat here. Many local area experts have cited the fact that recent rainfall and cooling temperatures are perfect conditions for a long-lasting and colorful leaf season. Rainfall helps to keep leaves on trees longer, while rapidly cooling temperatures contribute to the change in the color of the leaves. People from all-around the United States come to visit the Appalachian mountain ranges during the autumn season for their renowned beauty. What better way to spend a vacation during the fall months, than to be in Asheville, NC? From late September through early November, leaf-lookers and outdoor enthusiasts will be enamored by the kaleidoscope of leaf colors upon the trees, scattered among the mountainside, and hanging out around downtown. Monday, August 18, 2008 Asheville Ballet Holds Hip-Hop ClassA free class will be offered by the Asheville Ballet, taught by hip-hop artist Brandi Hand for kids 9-through-12. The class will be offered on Saturday at nine in the morning at the Ballet's studio 4 located on Weaverville Highway in North Asheville. There will be no charge for the class. Brandi was a choreographer for the New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Hornets. She was also lead dancer in the Super Bowl. Wednesday, August 6, 2008 Court Gives OK to AnnexationAsheville got the green light from the North Carolina Court of Appeals to annex several contested areas of Buncombe County. The areas include Ridge Field Business Park and a zone off of Airport Road. Several property owners that were disputing the annexation are still able to appeal the decision to North Carolina's Supreme Court -- though the court has recently declined to hear an annexation case along similar grounds. The citizens trying to stop annexation are claiming that Asheville's ability to provide services such as water, police and fire protection are inadequate. Labels: asheville
Friday, August 1, 2008 Bears Spotted in Asheville Asheville has seen record numbers of bear sightings this summer, due to heat and food shortages. Citizens have called animal control to report at least ten bears in the past week alone. Most sightings have been in east and south Asheville areas. The heat this summer has made the animals very much more active than normal, and while they are in this active state, they tend to journey much farther than normal to search for food. Though there have been no accidents (besides overturned trash cans) animal control is still encouraging locals to be vigilant. Labels: asheville, environment
